Horizontal and Vertical Alliances-School of Diplomacy/Diplomatic Politics in China

Image result for 100 schools of thought in china

During the first emperor of Chinese period there were hundred schools of thought in China and Qin Shi Huang after unification of China has ordered all the books from other schools to be burned and endorsed Legalism as ideology of the Qin State. In those Hundred Schools of Thought one School of thought was the School of Diplomacy- Guiguzi,Zhang Yin and Su Qin are the major figures in this school of thought. While Zhang Yin endorsed the Horizontal Alliances Theory and Su Qin endorsed the Vertical Alliances Theory.Guiguzi was the teacher to these two people and was the founder of the School of Diplomacy .The contents of the Guiguzi text cover the relationship between lobbying techniques and the theory of yin and yang, techniques of political evaluation of the state, evaluation of political relationships between state leaders and ministers, psychological profiling of lobbying targets and rhetorical devices. This school focused on practical matters instead of any moral principle, so it stressed political and diplomatic tactics, and debate and lobbying skill. Scholars from this school were good orators, debaters and tacticians.

Zhang Yi was an important strategist and was a student of Politics and Foreign Relations and helped Qin in dissolving the unity of other states and thus paved the way for Qin to unify China. He believed in the Horizontal Alliance theory of Diplomacy and he offered ideas to befriend other states in order to break the alliance and which eventually made him a prime minister in the kingdom as during that period vertical alliance theory was followed by other states and there was unity among them.

At that time, Su Qin's vertical alliance tactic still influenced China, and formed a sort of unity between the states of HanZhao, Wei, Chu, Yan and Qi. Zhang offered ideas to King Hui about ways to befriend Wei and Yan in order to break the alliance, which Hui graciously accepted. Hui decided to make him the prime minister.[3]
In 314 BC, civil war broke out in Yan. King Xuan of Qi attacked Yan and murdered the King of Yan. King Huai of Chu, who was the head of the vertical alliance, allied with Qi. Qi-Chu alliance would provoke a great threat to Qin's unification. Hui sent Zhang to weaken the alliance.[3] Zhang first drew the attention of the king by bestowing expensive gifts to his favoured official, Jin Shang. He then struck a deal with Huai. They agreed that Huai would end his alliance with Qi if Qin gave back 600 li of land that Qin had previously captured to Huai.[6] Huai immediately accepted despite his official Chen Zhen's scepticism regarding the trustworthiness of Zhang. When Huai sent a messenger to Xianyang to retrieve the land, Zhang gave Chu six li of his own land, and claimed he had said 'six li' of his own land instead of the six hundred of Qin he had promised.[6] Chu went to war with Qin. Qin defeated Chu and demanded a further six hundred liof land.[3]
Zhang repeatedly negotiated with Han, Zhao, Wei, Chu, Yan and Qi, thereby destroying their relationships with horizontal alliances, and paving the way for Qin's unification of China

Su Qin was also a influential political strategist and endorsed the vertical alliance theory of diplomacy which supported unification of all other kingdoms against the kingdom of Qin while the horizontal alliance supported alliances with the state of Qin.

At his most brilliant Su Qin persuaded the leaders of the six kingdoms of QiChuYanHanZhao and Wei to unite against the Qin state through the use of his splendid rhetoric and thereafter wore robes decorated with the insignia of the six states. The allies of the Vertical Alliance advanced on the State of Qin but were easily defeated due to internal discord between the former enemies.
One theory suggests that he and Zhang Yi mutually reinforced each other's viewpoints in order to achieve their personal goals.

A wasted visit to the Qin State
When Su Qin arrived in Qin, the state's ruler Duke Xiao of Qin had just died. His successor King Huiwen of Qin, destested the political reformer Shang Yang of whom the former Duke had been an avid supporter and promptly had him executed. King Huiwen also hated talented foreigners such that Su Qin made no headway.
Negotiations with the Yan State
Su Qin told Marquis Wen, the ruler of the Yan State that the threat posed by the Zhao State was greater than that from the Qin Stateand that he should form an alliance with the State of Qi. As a result, Su Qin came to be highly regarded in the Yan State.
Negotiations with the Zhao State
Su Qin informed the Marquis of Zhao that his territory lay in a crucial position, slightly offset from the other warring states but ultimately disadvantageous. He suggested that because of this, in an alliance with the other powers, the Zhao State would effectively hold the balance of power. Much impressed by the idea, the Zhao ruler rewarded Su Qin financially and invited him to venture forth and discuss an alliance with the other states.
Negotiations with the Han State
Su Qin angered King Xuan of Han and made him focus on the Vertical Alliance.
Negotiations with the Wei State
Encouraging the selfishness of the Wei officials, Su Qin persuaded King Xiang of Wei to concentrate on the Vertical Alliance.
Negotiations with the Qi State
Su Qin made it clear that it was impossible for the Qin State to cross Zhao and Wei and attack Qi. As a result, to the great shame of Su Qin, the Qi State pledged allegiance to the Qin.
Negotiations with the Chu State
Su Qin told King Wei of the Chu that the other six warring states had already formed an alliance. King Wei refused to join and was inevitably attacked by the State of Qin.
At the end of this period of canvassing, Su Qin became chief administrator of the Vertical Alliance and wore the insignia of the six member nations. After he became famous, he returned to his hometown in a blaze of glory. His parents welcomed him thirty li from home, his sister-in-law crawled like a snake whilst the surprise showed on his wife but she dared not look at him, her former stubbornness having become respect. Once more Su Qin lamented "the parents are poor but not the son". Although already an official of the six nation alliance, Marquis Su of Zhao appointed Su Qin ruler of Wu'an in modern-day Henan Province. According to the records of the Vertical Alliance, the Qin State went into decline and would not dare cross the strategic Hangu Pass for a further fifteen years.

Defeat of the Vertical Alliance and the death of Su Qin[edit]

The six nation Vertical Alliance started out with each member state pursuing their own interests and as a result the foundations were shallow. A punitive expedition mounted by the State of Qin against the states of QiWei and Zhao brought the end of the Vertical Alliance; Su Qin left the Zhao State and the alliance disintegrated.

The Story of Vijayawada- An Article from Andhrastoriesblogspot.in

Vijayawada…..What is so special in this name?  it’s a great railway junction. It has a living river flowing by its side. It has given India its national flag. It was a place where great leaders who played a crucial role in the Indian independence struggle were born.It has one of the shakti peetas.  It has one of the biggest bus-terminals in the world.  It has the most comfortable weather , an all-time spring scenario. It is a center for education. It is the place where the leaders of the cinema industry were mentored. To put it in one sentence “It is the place where people think!” On the other hand it is that place in India which is only next to Mumbai in terms of rowdy sheets. It is the place rowdies have ruled for decades. It is the place where a girl who steps outside the house is so insecure.  Apart from rowdy history which Ram Gopal Varma is portraying there is the other dark side. It has become a fashion to kill in the name of love. And all started here...
